It was a beautiful day as I walked up the trail toward the falls. I was too new at my craft to know that I should avoid such places on days like these. Olympic woods are too dark and the contrasts are too extreme on sunny days. Film either blocks up the shadows or washes out the highlights. When I arrived at my favorite viewing spot below the falls I knew that I had stumbled upon one of God’s masterpieces. But, would I be able to do it justice? Today I would probably say, “NO!”. But then, in my ignorance, I took the challenge. On the way back I was greeted by a young park ranger leading visitors on a nature walk. “Beautiful day!”, he remarked. That was surely an understatement!
