Second beach is a special place. . .remote from the world, yet easily reached by trail. Access from either end is prevented by rocky headlands. Incoming waves gently stroke its broad sands. And the nearby sea stacks give it a spectacular setting. This memorable morning began at first light as I made the familiar half mile trek to the beach. I had timed my visit for low tide and wanted to be there for sunrise. The gray light, however, offered little encouragement. I found the beach deserted. And I was alone in this immense place--alone with the cool damp air, the low thunder of distant waves and the misty light of morning. After relishing the solitude for an hour or so, the sky began to take on character and suddenly this scene presented itself—a visage dripping with northwest mystique.
