Just below the old Dungeness Cemetery is the Lotzgesell family farm. Little changed from the early days, this farm preserves the pastoral nature for which the Dungeness Valley is known. I had visited this quiet spot many times to relish the view and reflect on our first white settlers who also must have had an eye for beauty. It was early; about 7 A.M. Fresh snow had fallen in the mountains the night before. And with a clearing sky it had turned numbing cold. As I prepared to photograph the scene, wispy clouds began to form. Within ten minutes of this photograph, the sky became completely overcast. The Dungeness Valley had been given its daily dose of sunshine. And I had been given a rare, if fleeting, gift.
